Hospitals Failing to Give Patients Their Medicine
We have all at some point or another had to wait in long queues at the pharmacy in order to get our prescriptions, however one place where you wouldn’t expect to have wait for them is when you’re actually a patient in hospital. The medicines are on site and at the very least you would expect to receive your drugs on time especially if you suffer discomfort without them.
It seems through that this is not the case. The National Patients Safety watchdog stated that all hospitals have a problem with getting medicines to patients. Many patients receive their medicine late while others do not receive it at all. The problem is so serious that from September 2006 to July last year there were 27 deaths and 21 000 less serious cases which were caused by hospitals not administering patients with medicine or administering it too late.
The government have already stated several times that “patient safety was its top priority” so let’s hope that they look deeply into what is causing these problems so that there are no more deaths over something which should be a simple process.
