What does being a manager actually entail? That you manage?

Well, we all manage.

What do people mean when they say that they’ll manage? They mean that they don’t really know what they’re doing, but that they’ll blunder through somehow; that they’ll somehow escape from a situation unscathed, barely succeeding in the face of their own ignorance and general incompetence. Management isn’t about triumph – it’s about getting away with things.

So why not go on a management training course? Learn how to muddle by more effectively. Learn how to muddle through a wider variety of situations.

On a management training course, you’ll learn skills such as retaining positivity in the face of relentless bank holiday traffic. ‘How are we going to cope with this?’ someone will ask. ‘Oh, we’ll manage,’ you reply.

You’ll also learn about having only one car, where before you had two. You’ll learn to manage through the use of public transport, cadged lifts and insanely complicated plans involving depositing the car somewhere and the other person picking it up later on their way back from such and such a place.

Finally, you’ll learn how to take part in complex activities with entirely inappropriate equipment. You’ll surf with your glasses on. You’ll rock climb with your dad’s harness from the 1970s. You’ll camp with only a quarter of the tent pegs.

In short: you’ll manage.

For those of you who have just entered the White Collar stereotype, we welcome you.

Be aware that times are tough and if you are to succeed in this market you are going to have to shine above the rest.

Get to work early, do the best of your ability, stay punctual and keep your appearence smart to stay under the radar, whilst you are fitting in.

If you do this you should have nothing to worry about, anything that may result in bad news will most likely not be under your control and unfortently will just have to deal with, as at the momemt it seems to be a regular occurence.

In these times it’s good to see the majority of IT workers trying to stay upbeat. Reports of record lay offs and unemployment still haunt the industry but they are sticking through it and remaining positive about the future.

With many companies enforcing stricter rules, the office environments are to suffer reducing the enjoyment of the jobs at hand.

With recent news that the economy has already hit it’s worst and can now only go up, people are starting to be more positive, working through the last half of whats been the worst economic situation in a long long time.

Be the ideal employee to stay out of the firing line!

Whilst I was hoping to make something positive for our monthly report, it’s mostly gloom and doom in the markets at the minute.

For us White Collars, we are constantly looking over our shoulders and listening out for the dreaded R word which might come out of the cracks in your bosses sound proof room.

The advice for today is make sure you have a solid plan B. Get networking for any potential jobs you could go to if the worst was to happen.

The smaller gap between jobs the better. You never go a day without reading about some sap story of how employee X got fired and has been on job seekers allowance for 6 months.

Keep your eyes peeled!

By submitting your CV to a number of agencies they can increase your chances of getting a job quickly by submitting your CV to many people.

By searching through focussed agencies, you can find using these directories you might find better suited jobs for yourselves.

As some jobs that might match you perfectly might not be listed in the usual big recruitment websites it’s worth trying alternative methods that you wouldn’t normally use to find the ideal job.

Taking the example of nurses, there are many centralised locations which focus on providing employment news on the relavant field of work.

When searching for jobs in your area, try searching for Employment Nurses UK or something similar. The results will mostly bring up communities where you can get specilist advice in finding a job that suits your needs and location requirements, if you can afford to be that fussy!

With jobs being ever harder to get it seems this might be something to consider.

For companies out there struggling to find a gem out of a haystack, think about taking on extra work, even using this tactic to get people better experience in the field. Sure they will move on soon, but the cheap services will help everyone out.

According to a recent June study, it’s said that the number of accounting jobs between the top 50 UK companies has fallen by 5%, which is estimated to be around 3,500 people.

With the job market being increasingly competitive news such as this only makes matters worse.

Companies such as KPMG managed to reduce workers days from 5 to 4 in the hope that this would avoid laying off staff. This was last winter. Today they are looking at reducing staff by 200.

When you are greeted with good news about the economy, you also get greeted with more bad news.

Keep your heads up people!
